China will shut 725,600 mt/year of outdated copper smelting capacity, including recycled copper capacity, before the end of September, the country's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said on its website Friday.

A total of 43 copper smelters will be required to shut, MIIT said.

In addition, 30 steel producers with a combined steelmaking capacity of 22.595 million mt/year and 164 ferroalloy producers with a combined capacity of around 2 million mt/year capacity will be asked to shut before end September, MIIT said.

While the companies will have to stop production by the end of September, they will have until the end of this year to ensure that all their production facilities are dismantled. Companies will not be allowed to move their equipment elsewhere.

The shutdown order is in line with the central government's aim to lower emissions and save energy in its 12th Five-Year Plan period over 2011-2015.
