China's Guangdong Aug coal imports at 4.4 mil mt, down 22.5% on month

Southern China's economic hub of Guangdong province imported 4.4 million mt of coal in August, a month-on-month fall of 22.54% from July, Fenwei Energy, a business unit of Platts in China, reports, citing Chinese customs data.

The total value of Guangdong's coal imports last month was $288.83 million, which translated into an average price of $65.64/mt, down $2.19/mt month on month, and $11.50/mt lower year on year.

Imports of thermal coal, mainly used for power generation in the province, stood at 4.05 million mt in August, down 24% month on month, but up 35% year on year.

Of this total, low grade lignite coal accounted for 42.72% or 1.73 million mt of Guangdong's coal imports in August, down 28.22% from July. About 91.33% of the total lignite imports were from Indonesia.

Guangdong province also imported 202,179 mt of coking coal in August, down 1.04% month on month and plunging 40.71% from a year earlier.

State-owned Guangdong Yudean Group Co., Ltd. imported 827,164 mt of coal in August, the highest in the province, followed by privately owned Dongguan Huihuang Energy Co, which imported 413,450 mt.

China Huaneng Fuel Co. Ltd., a subsidiary of the country's top generator Huaneng Group, imported 339,926 mt of coal in August.

Over January-August this year, Guangdong province's total coal imports reached 42.12 million mt, edging down 0.45% from the same period last year, with total value down 9.38% year on year to $2.9 billion.

During the same eight-month period, thermal coal imports reached 37.02 million mt, up 6.59% year on year, with lignite rising 14.02% to 18.06 million mt, while coking coal imports were 1.74 million mt, plunging 33.84% from a year earlier.
