Thermal coal imports into 12 major Indian ports jump 19% to 70.77 mil mt in Apr-Jan: IPA

India's 12 major government-owned ports handled about 70.77 million mt of imported thermal coal during April 2014-January 2015, up 18.7% from 59.64 million mt in the same period a year ago, latest data released by the Indian Ports Association showed.

Coking coal imports over the 10-month period of the current fiscal year however, fell to 26.48 million mt, down 4.1% from 27.62 million mt in the year-ago period, the data showed.

Paradip port on the east coast handled the highest volume of thermal coal imports during April-January, at 25.14 million mt, or up 20.8% from 20.81 million mt a year ago.

Paradip port also received the highest coking coal shipments over April-January, at 6.53 million mt compared with 5.81 million mt in the year-ago period, representing an increase of 12.3%.

The 12 ports are Kolkata, Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Ennore, Chennai, VO Chidambaranar (Tuticorin), Cochin, New Mangalore, Mormugao, Mumbai, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) and Kandla.
