State-run Nigeria National Petroleum Corp and China State Construction
Engineering Corp have launched the third in a series of refinery projects
agreed in May in a deal worth $23 billion, an NNPC official said Friday.
"We have gone to inspect the land for the proposed site for the Bayelsa
refinery," NNPC director for engineering and technology Billy Agha told
Platts.
"The refinery will have the capacity to produce about 500,000 mt of LPG
per year and also create an additional 2,000 jobs for the youths in the Niger
Delta," Agha said.
He did not say when the project would take off.
In May, NNPC signed a deal with CSCEC to build three refineries with a
total capacity of 750,000 b/d in the West African country aimed at boosting
the local supply of products.
The parties have already launched two projects in the commercial capital
Lagos and in central Kogi state.
Oil-rich Nigeria imports around 80% of its fuel needs because of the poor
condition of its four state-owned refineries.
