Indian Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal stated on the 4th that, in light of changes in the global situation, India will ensure its energy security by diversifying its energy sources.

US President Donald Trump announced on social media on the 2nd that, under a trade agreement reached with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi that day, India will cease purchasing Russian oil, and the US will reduce the so-called "reciprocal tariff" on Indian goods from 25% to 18%. He also mentioned that India will significantly increase its purchases of US oil and may potentially buy oil from Venezuela.

Modi confirmed on the same day that the US would lower tariffs on Indian goods but did not comment on India halting purchases of Russian oil.

On the 4th, Goyal provided the first explanation to the parliament regarding the aforementioned trade agreement, without mentioning that India would cease purchasing oil from any specific country. According to Reuters, Indian refineries have not yet received any government directive to stop buying Russian oil.

On the 3rd, Russian officials stated that they had not heard any statements from India about halting purchases of Russian oil. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on the 4th that India's announcement of diversifying oil procurement is "nothing new," as India has always purchased oil from multiple countries.

Analysts believe that while the US and India reached a trade agreement based on practical interests, as the world's third-largest oil consumer and importer, it would be difficult for India to completely stop purchasing Russian oil.
