Solvay Announces Production Cut: Annual Soda Ash Capacity in Spain Adjusted to 420,000 Tons Starting Q3 2026

Solvay recently announced that, starting from the third quarter of 2026, it will reduce the annual soda ash production capacity of its Torrelavega plant in Spain from 600,000 tons to 420,000 tons to enhance the competitiveness of its global assets. This adjustment is subject to the completion of necessary consultation procedures, and the baking soda business will remain unaffected.

This capacity adjustment is primarily in response to the current challenging market conditions, including global oversupply of soda ash and persistently high energy and carbon costs in Europe. Solvay stated that this move is crucial for ensuring the long-term operation and sustainable development of the remaining capacity at the Torrelavega plant. The company will ensure stable supply to customers through this plant and its global supply network. After the adjustment, the plant will focus on serving regional soda ash and high-end baking soda customers, further leveraging its geographical advantages.

Etienne Galan, President of Solvay's Soda Ash & Derivatives division, stated that the company is taking decisive actions to enhance the competitiveness and sustainability of its soda ash business, including advancing carbon-neutral soda ash production processes within its energy transition roadmap.
