The Japanese government held a cabinet meeting and officially passed the provisional budget for the 2026 fiscal year, which has been submitted to the Diet for deliberation.

The provisional budget applies for a period of 11 days from April 1 to 11, with total general account expenditures amounting to 8.5641 trillion yen. The government aims to secure Diet approval by March 30 to avoid a budget gap.

This provisional budget marks the first such implementation in 11 years since 2015. Due to disagreements between the ruling and opposition parties over the pace of deliberations for the formal budget, the government introduced a transitional measure primarily covering social security and local allocation tax grants. It will automatically expire once the formal budget is passed.
