SunSirs: Sulfur Market Hits the Brakes?

The sulfur market is temporarily experiencing a historic, one-sided upward trend; prices have broken through recent one-year highs—and even all-time records. While short-term upward momentum persists, clear overbought signals have fully emerged, necessitating vigilance regarding the risk of a high-level correction.

Current Market Status

Price Trend: Unidirectional upward movement, repeatedly hitting new highs.

According to data from SunSirs, as of April 7, the benchmark price for sulfur stood at 6,700.00 RMB/ton—an increase of 12.73% compared to the beginning of the month (5,943.33 RMB/ton). Since initiating an upward trend in mid-March, prices have surged by over 70%, reaching an all-time high.

International Market: Middle East FOB prices range from $720 to $740 per ton—also reaching a new historical high. Import landed costs are converging with domestic spot prices, thereby establishing strong support.

Behind this market rally lies the "resonance" of multiple favorable factors:

Supply Side: Tensions in the Middle East have directly resulted in a reduction in import supplies. As a primary source for sulfur imports, FOB prices in the Middle East have surged to $720–$740 per ton; this inversion of import costs has effectively eliminated any room for domestic prices to decline.

On the demand side: Downstream demand from the phosphate fertilizer and new energy sectors remains rigid; coupled with low port inventory levels, the market is currently in a classic state of "supply falling short of demand." Quotes for granular sulfur at Yangtze River ports have reached 6,320–6,380 RMB/ton, while prices for domestically produced solid sulfur in Shandong have stabilized at 6,150–6,250 RMB/ton, signaling a booming spot market.

Futures Market: As of April 5, domestic sulfur futures (such as the S2605 contract) reached 6,330 RMB/ton, an increase of 230 yuan from the previous day. The strong performance of the futures market has further bolstered bullish sentiment in the spot market.

Future Price Forecast

Following its ascent to a record high, the momentum driving further rapid upward movement is expected to wane. There is a high probability that the market will enter a phase of high-level consolidation—characterized by repeated fluctuations around current levels (e.g., within the 6,500–6,800 RMB/ton range). Investors should remain vigilant regarding any bearish news—such as an easing of geopolitical tensions or intensifying resistance from downstream sectors—that could trigger a swift technical correction.

In summary, in the short term, the probability of sulfur prices continuing their sharp upward trajectory is low, owing to technical overbought conditions and warnings regarding systemic risks. Prices are expected to transition into a pattern of high-level consolidation, while simultaneously facing the risk of a potential correction at any moment. The medium-to-long-term trend, conversely, remains highly contingent upon geopolitical developments in the Middle East and the status of import supplies. Given the current systemic assessment indicating an "extremely elevated position," any strategy involving chasing the rally requires the utmost caution.
