Wanhua Chemical takes the lead! New national standard for lithium battery solvent NMP officially released

Recently, the national standard GB/T 27563—2026 "N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone for Industrial Use," led and revised by Wanhua Chemical, was officially released. This standard will replace GB/T 27563—2011 and will be formally implemented starting from December 1, 2026.

N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (abbreviated as NMP) is an indispensable core solvent in the cathode coating process of lithium batteries and is widely used in the manufacturing fields of new energy power batteries and energy storage batteries.

This standard compilation work gathered leading enterprises from the entire lithium battery materials and chemical industry chain to participate together. It fills the gap in standardization in the domestic battery-grade NMP field, establishes a unified and standardized technical basis for the upstream solvent industry of battery materials, and assists in the high-quality development of the battery industry.

This standard revision closely follows the industry demands of the rapid development of the new energy industry and innovatively adds a product grading system. The products are divided into two major categories: general industrial grade (Type I, Type II) and battery industrial grade, adapting to the stringent production and manufacturing requirements of new energy batteries such as power batteries and energy storage batteries.

At the level of key technical indicators, the new standard comprehensively raises the control threshold for battery industrial grade products: the purity limit for battery-grade NMP is increased to over 99.90%, and the limit for moisture content is significantly tightened; for the first time, more than ten metal ions, including sodium, iron, copper, and calcium, are listed as mandatory inspection items, with strict control thresholds set at the ppb level; new indicators for metallic particle impurities and supporting testing methods have been added to unify industry quality judgment criteria.

At the same time, the standard further improves the control specifications for the entire chain of product identification, packaging, storage, and transportation. It requires products to be marked with grading information to clearly distinguish between general industrial grade and battery industrial grade high-purity materials; raises packaging standards to promote moisture-proof nitrogen-sealed packaging; and improves transportation-related control requirements to avoid the risk of material contamination caused by mixed transportation.

Industry insiders stated that the implementation of GB/T 27563—2026 will unify the quality judgment benchmark of the NMP industry, regulate the supply quality of upstream solvent products, remove standardization blockages in the upstream of the lithium battery industry chain, promote the quality upgrade of new energy battery raw materials, and support the sustainable and healthy development of the domestic power battery and energy storage industries.
