Saudi Kayan plans to start operations at its polycarbonate plant at Jubail, Saudi Arabia, at the end of March, sources close to company said Tuesday.

The startup of the plant, which can make up to 260,000 mt/year of polycarbonate, will indicate that the company's phenolics complex is fully operational.

On March 2, Saudi Kayan started operations at its 270,000 mt/year bisphenol-A plant. BPA is a raw material used for making polycarbonate, a plastic found in household appliances, electronic goods, and automotive and aircraft components. BPA itself is derived from phenol and acetone.

Saudi Kayan's phenolics complex has a design capacity of 245,000 mt/year of phenol and 140,000 mt/year of acetone. The company began exporting acetone in the first half of January 2011.

Petrochemicals major Saudi Basic Industries Corp., or Sabic, owns 35% of Saudi Kayan, while 20% is held by the Al-Kayan Petrochemical Company, and 45% is in the hands of public shareholders.
