AGL Energy plans to build a A$45 million ($45.4 million) gas-fired co-generation facility at Australian plastics manufacturer Qenos' Altona plant in the southeastern state of Victoria, the companies said Thursday.

The plant will have a nominal capacity of 21MW and when coupled with a heat recovery steam generator, will produce up to 88 mt/hour of steam, AGL said in a statement. The embedded co-generation facility is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with the production of polyethylene at the Qenos plant by 100,000 mt/year of carbon dioxide equivalent, the utility added.

The facility is expected to consume around 4.5 petajoules/year of natural gas, to be supplied exclusively by AGL. The company will also operate and maintain the plant under a 15-year contract, with options to extend to 25 years. "This represents [Australia's] largest investment in industrial or manufacturing co-generation in over 10 years," said Anthony Fowler, AGL's group general manager merchant energy. "It also helps Qenos remain competitive as Australia prepares for a carbon constraint."

Qenos' Altona plant has the capacity to produce about 200,000 mt/year of high density polyethylene, 90,000 mt/year of low density PE and 120,000 mt/year of linear low density PE.
