US crude imports plunged by 1.056 million b/d in February to 8.013 million b/d, an 11-year low, according to the latest data from the US Energy Information Administration.

Volumes were last below this level on a monthly basis in January 2000.

Among the top five suppliers, only Canada and Saudi Arabia increased volumes. Canada's 44,000 b/d increase took crude imports from the US' northern neighbor to a new monthly record of 2.193 million b/d. Saudi Arabia boosted volumes by 15,000 b/d to 1.114 million b/d.

But imports from Mexico fell by 220,000 b/d to 998,000 b/d while volumes from Nigeria and Venezuela dipped by 20,000 b/d and 73,000 b/d to 948,000 b/d and 878,000 b/d respectively.

Other big drops came from Iraq, in seventh place, Colombia in 10th place and Algeria in 11th place.

Iraq supplied 263,000 b/d of crude to the US in February, down 207,000 b/d from January's 470,000 b/d. Imports from Columbia fell by 128,000 b/d to 175,000 b/d while those from Algeria plummeted by 240,000 b/d.

Crude imports from OPEC fell by 437,000 b/d to 4.077 million b/d while those from the Persian Gulf fell by 222,000 b/d to 1.495 million b/d.

The EIA data, released late last week, showed that the top five suppliers accounted for 77% of US crude imports, while the top ten -- including Angola, Iraq, Ecuador, Brazil, and Colombia -- accounted for 92%.
