Petrochemicals producer Arkema has declared force majeure on its polyvinyl chloride production site at Lavera, in southern France, market sources said Wednesday.

"It's official. Arkema has declared FM at Lavera; a letter has been sent to clients," a source said.

Another source said "this will contribute to tightening PVC stocks further."

Arkema was not immediately available for comment on the matter Wednesday.

Lavera produces 341,000 mt/year of chlorine, 25% of total French production, as well as 980,000 mt/year of ethylene dichloride, and 460,000 mt/year of vinyl chloride monomer, some 40% of French production.

Last week, a company source told Platts that the Lavera facility was having problems restarting following scheduled maintenance that began in March.
