EU regulators launch consultation on internal gas market model

European energy regulators Tuesday launched a public consultation on proposals for the EU's internal gas market model.

The model is based on the results of four public workshops and bilateral discussions with stakeholders and recommends hub to hub trading with just five to six traded areas as the best way to achieve an EU internal gas market.

EU leaders have committed to complete the internal gas and power markets by 2014, and regulators have been working with industry since last year to agree a target gas model. The aim is to boost gas market competition in key areas and identify future market problems whilst securing supply.

"This public consultation aims at gathering stakeholders' views to further develop the European energy regulators' high level vision for the regulatory design of the single European gas market," the Council of European Energy Regulators, a voluntary association said.

Stakeholders are invited to participate in the public consultation via a dedicated online questionnaire on the CEER website by September 20.

A final version of the gas market model is expected in October.
