Poland's Zaklady Azotowe Pulaway and Zaklady Azotowe w Tarnowie-Moscicach have signed an agreement to build a new caprolactam plant in Asia, the companies announced late Monday.

"The location of the planned plant -- we are thinking of China or Taiwan -- should allow us to source raw materials and energy on favourable terms, thus maintaining the cost of caprolactam production at competitive levels," Jerzy Marciniak, president of Tarnowie-Moscicach said. "We will also take into account other technology-related aspects, such as the possibility of selling ammonium sulphate on the local market."

At the signing on Monday, no details were released about when construction of the new plant will begin or its production capacity.

Both companies said world demand for caprolactam increases by 3% yearly, compared with as much as 8% in China.

In 2010, Poland exported 45,575 mt of caprolactam to China, accounting for about 7% of the 631,930 mt the Asian giant imported last year.
