The Canada Border Services Agency on Friday initiated an investigation of alleged rebar dumping from Belarus, Hong Kong, Japan, Portugal, Spain and Taiwan.

The case is in response to a complaint filed by ArcelorMittal Long Products Canada of Contrecoeur, Quebec; AltaSteel of Edmonton; and Gerdau Ameristeel of Whitby, Ontario.

The Canadian International Trade Tribunal will now begin an inquiry to determine if these imports are injuring domestic producers and will make a preliminary determination by October 18.

The CBSA investigation is expected to produce preliminary dumping determinations by November 17.

Further details about the investigation will be available on the CBSA website within the next 15 days.

The Canadian Steel Producers Association welcomed the government action.

"We appreciate the CBSA's commitment through this investigation to ensuring that fair trade in imports of rebar will be respected," CSPA President Joseph Galimberti said.

The CSPA noted that this is the second Canadian rebar import investigation in the past two years. The previous case resulted in the 2015 imposition of dumping duties on imports from China, South Korea and Turkey.
