Solar power breaks UK's new records for full-week generation

As the UK basks in the sun this June, solar PV has generated 533 GWh of electricity during the past seven days, hitting a new record for a full week's generation, according to data from Sheffield University and the National Grid Thursday.

"During the past week, solar PV generated 533 GWh of electricity. This is a new record for a full week's generation. Five of the seven consecutive days yielded over 75 GWh. This is also a new record. It's likely that this record will be broken again today," Sheffield University tweeted at midday London time.

Solar power production has seen multi-year highs for June, with output peaking above 8 GW in the last seven days, data form S&P Global Platts Analytics shows.

Solar generation for June until Thursday has already reached 1618.31 GWh, exceeding solar output seen during full-months of June in 2016 and 2017, according to Platts Analytics.

In June 2016, the solar generation was 1098.23 GWh, while it was at 1,379.3 GWh during the full-month of June 2017.

This month has also seen highest daily solar output at 81.27 GWh on June 22 since 2016, records from Platts Analytics show.

UK'S SOLAR PV UP 1.6% IN MAY

Separately, the UK's installed solar photovoltaic capacity at the end of May was up slightly by 1.6%, or 199.6 MW, on the year to 12,823 MW across 950,923 installations, the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy said Thursday.

Some 10.3 MW of solar PV capacity in 2,928 installations was deployed in May, the data showed.

"The figure for deployment within the latest month should always be taken as highly provisional -- it is likely to be revised upwards as further data are received on newly operational sites," BEIS said.

BEIS said 45%, or 5,814 MW MW, of total installed solar PV capacity was in large-scale installations greater than 5 MW, with 20%, or 2,556.4 MW, coming from small-scale installations of up to 4 kW.

According to BEIS, within the last two years, the largest increase in capacity occurred in March 2016 at 1,221 MW, ahead of the Renewables Obligation closure on March 31, 2017.
