Zitong, Sichuan, China, June 4, 2010 — As part of its commitment to the local community, PPG Industries (NYSE:PPG) recently sponsored a “PPG Eco-life Around You” writing competition for 10 middle schools in Zitong, PPG’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) base in Sichuan province, China. Five outstanding essays were selected from the awarded essays and sent to compete further in the “Bingxin national essay writing competition”; all of them received the golden prizes and the winners will attend the awarding ceremony in Beijing in July. PPG sponsored the whole event including the travel cost for students attending the national competition.

“This competition has encouraged students to learn more about why and how we should protect the environment and to think about ways of saving energy in their daily lives,” said Cathy Yan, general manager of government affairs and business development, PPG Asia/Pacific. “Through the competition, we hope to raise awareness of environmental protection in the Zitong community.”

The competition involved 13,000 students from all 10 middle schools in Zitong, and 190 students received prizes at the school and county levels. The five winning essays selected to compete in the Bingxin national essay writing competition are:
• “To Save Green Lives,” by Liang Qiaoming and Wei Zhen, Renhe Middle School
• “Don’t Get Buried by Garbage,” by Chen Yajie, Liya Middle School
• “Our Eco-conscious Lives,” by Jin Yanpin, Tongjiang Middle School
• “Treasure Our Only Home,” by Jing Huan, Xuzhou Middle School
• “The Long Way to Environmental Safety,” by Liu Peng, Ziqiang Middle School

“We see love for the Earth, worries about the environment, and hope for the future in these excellent essays,” Yan said. “We will continue to encourage these kinds of campaigns in the future to promote an eco-conscious lifestyle.”

PPG regards the recognition of the concerns and needs of society as a key corporate value, with strategic interests including education, human services, culture and arts, civic and community affairs, and health and safety. As part of its CSR effort in China in 2009, the company helped to rebuild 50 school libraries in Zitong with a total donation of about RMB 4.03 million, and it launched the PPG CSR Zitong base as the platform for further contributions to the local community.
