Global MEG Capacity Rapidly Expands

PUWORLD(2010-6-8)——Global MEG capacity reached 22.651 million t/y in 2008. Dow Chemical, formerly the largest MEG producer in the world, has production capacities both in U.K. and U.S. By this year, Eastern Petrochemical’s MEG capacity reached 3.3 million t/y, replacing Dow Chemical to become the largest MEG producer. Most MEG capacities are located in Asia. From 2006-2010, newly-built MEG capacities exceeded 8 million t/y, with more than 5 million t/y capacities mushroomed in Saudi, Iran, Kuwait and other Middle East countries. Middle East has replaced North America to be the largest export area.
 
China, being the largest consumer of MEG in the world, is also expanding its production capacity of MEG. Following are some new facilities information:
 
Sinopec China Petrochemical: With the on-stream of Sinopec Zhenhai Refinery’s 650kt/y EO/EG facility in late April, total capacity of Sinopec China Petrochemical in East China reached 2 million tons, with major enterprises including Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical, Zhenhai Refinery, BASF YPC, etc. Zhenhai Refinery and Shanghai Petrochemical would become the two largest MEG producers in China.
 
PetroChina: PetroChina Sichuan Petrochemical’s 2.5 million t/y cracker facility, 360kt/y MEG facility and boiler projects successively started production from July 2009.
 
Inner Mongolia Tongliao Jinmei’s Phase I 200kt/y coal-based MEG project has been put on stream.
 
Yizheng Chemical Fiber is the largest polyester producer in China, with an annual capacity of 1.08 million t/y polyester. It is heard that some 1.27 million t/y MEG capacity will be added, but will still rely on imports.
 

Statistics show that by the end of this year, China’s MEG capacity will arrive nearly 4 million t/y.
