A $100 million building will be constructed on the former Exxon-Mobil site to serve as the chemical company BASF’s North American headquarters, according to the Rockefeller Group, owners of the property.
The move will be announced tomorrow by the Rockefeller Group. BASF has been located on an adjacent property since moving from Mount Olive in 2004.

The new building is expected to be completed in the middle of 2012 and provide office space for 1,100 workers, said Leslie Smith, Jr. the executive vice president of development for the Rockefeller Group. The majority of those workers will come from their current Florham Park offices and 300 workers will come from an office on Mount Hope Avenue in Rockaway Township.

BASF is based in Germany and is the world's largest chemical company. Among other things, the company produces chemicals, plastics and agricultural products.

On Monday night, the Florham Park planning board approved the proposal, officials said.

It is expected to bring an additional $500,000 in tax revenue to the town, Smith said.

The Rockefeller Group will also donate approximately 60 acres of land to the borough.

A groundbreaking ceremony is planned for June 29 and construction is expected to begin in July, Smith said.

The Rockefeller Group purchased the 268-acre Exxon-Mobil property in 2000 and said it planned to build a 250-room hotel, 830,000 square-feet of office space, a sports medicine institute, a residential community of 425 units and a sports facility. The company calls the development The Green at Florham Park.

Currently, the only tenant is the New York Jets. in 2008, they moved into a 27-acre training center used for off-season practice.

In the face of a souring economy in 2009, construction of the hotel and sports institute was postponed.

"With BASF, we hope it is the tenant that may be the bridge we need to get everything going," Smith said.
