RasGas Company Limited, or RasGas, a joint venture of Qatar Petroleum and
ExxonMobil, Tuesday announced the sale of its first LNG cargo to Brazil's
state-led oil company Petrobras in what it said was a significant move by
Qatar, the world's biggest LNG exporter.
"This is a significant moment for Qatar and for RasGas, as it marks the
first shipment of Qatari LNG to Brazil," RasGas said in a statement,
describing the Brazilian joint stock company as Brazil's biggest and a
powerful player in global energy markets.
"The South American market for LNG is growing," said RasGas marketing
executive Khalid Sultan Al Kuwari in the statement, adding that RasGas'
increasing presence in that region "demonstrates our determination to extend
the global reach of Qatari LNG and to maintain the flexibility, reliability
and safety that characterises the company's operations."
RasGas was "delighted" to supply LNG on a spot basis to this new market
and looks forward to the possibility of continuing its relationship with
Petrobras in the future, Kuwari said.
The LNG cargo was loaded on to the LNG tanker Express at Ra Laffan port
in Qatar and is bound for either Pecem LNG Terminal in the northeastern state
of Ceara or the Guanabara Bay LNG Terminal in Rio de Janeiro, RasGas said.
The tanker is on a short-term charter to Petrobras.
Since its creation in 1993, RasGas has developed a portfolio of customers
in Asia, Europe and North America. The company also sells spot LNG cargoes to
customers in the three continents.
"Today, as the company makes spot sales of LNG to customers in South
America, its global reach continues to grow," it said.
RasGas currently produces approximately 37 million mt/year of LNG with
seven trains in operation.
