European ethanol output in 2009 increased by 31% year on year to an
estimated 3.7 billion liters, with France and Germany leading the way,
European bioethanol fuel producers association eBio said Wednesday.

According to data from the association, France produced 1.25 million
liters of ethanol, an increase of 25% compared to 2008, while Germany's output
rose by 32% to 750 million liters.

Spain remained the continent's third largest producer, with 465 million
liters, an increase of 46%.

Sweden and Austria more than doubled their production and now rank as the
fourth and fifth largest producers, respectively.

Consumption growth was slower, rising by 23% to an estimated 4.3 billion
liters, with Germany the biggest consumer followed by France and Sweden.

"Compared to the overall size of its fuel sector, Sweden thus still is
spearheading the relative ethanol fuel consumption," eBio said in a statement.

Imports from Brazil fell to 200 million liters in 2009 from 800 million
liters in 2008 due to lower production in the South American country.

According to eBio, the European market saw an increase in imports from
Nicaragua, Costa Rica and, for the first time, the US.

The association added that it was not possible to disclose import figures
for fuel ethanol only, as EU trade statistics do not distinguish between
ethanol imports by end-use.
