UK gas production fell 14.3% on year in 2009: National Statistics

Gross natural gas production in the UK fell 14.3% in 2009, according to
the Digest of UK Energy Statistics 2010, published Thursday by National
Statistics.

Gross natural gas production has fallen by 45% since its peak in 2000,
and net imports of gas accounted for a third of gas input into the
transmission system in 2009, according to DUKES.

Industry sources have noted, however, that lower output in 2009 may be
not just due to the decline of UK fields, but also partly the result of
commercial decisions to lower production in response to low prices and lower
demand due to the economic climate.

LNG imports accounted for a quarter of gas imports in 2009, compared with
2% in 2008, the statistics show. The UK opened two new LNG terminals in 2009,
South Hook and Dragon.

Gas accounted for 45% of electricity supplied in 2009, making it the
biggest fuel source for UK power supplies, with coal taking a 28% share and
nuclear 18%.

Combined heat and power generation in 2009 had reached installed capacity
of 5,569 MW, a 1.4% increase on 2008, suggesting that the UK may find it very
hard to hit its one-time target of having 10,000 MW of CHP by 2010.

Overall gas demand in 2009 fell by 7.7% on the previous year, due to
economic downturn. Gas demand for electricity generation fell by 5.5%, as
total electricity supply in the UK dropped 5.3% to 378.5 TWh, the fourth
successive year that total electricity supply has fallen.
