China's Jiangsu Sanmu Group Corporation has deferred startup of its new 50,000 mt/year phthalic anhydride plant to early September, as the company is grappling with a shortage of electricity, a company source confirmed Tuesday.

According to the source, Jiangsu Sanmu was to start up the phthalic anhydride plant "either Wednesday or Thursday this week," but the company found a problem with its electrical plant Monday, which resulted in the delay.

"The facility was to supply electricity to the phthalic anhydride plant,so without it, starting up the new plant would be impossible," the source said.

The source said that repair works, together with maintenance works, are being done on Jiangsu Sanmu's electrical plant, and were expected to be completed by end-August. This means that the earliest Jiangsu Sanmu can start up its new phthalic anhydride plant will be the first week of September.

Jiangsu Sanmu operates another 50,000 mt/year phthalic anhydride plant, which is understood to be running at 50% of capacity, due to weak margins.

Jiangsu Sanmu's phthalic anhydride facilities are sited in Yixing,Jiangsu province.
