Buzzard level in North Sea Forties blend back below 30%: BP

The amount of higher-sulfur Buzzard crude entering the North Sea Forties Pipeline System dropped 4 percentage points to 29% in the week ending August 1 from the week of July 19-25, FPS operator BP said Thursday.

Because the Buzzard field inputs sour crude into the FPS, the more it makes up of the Forties blend, the more sour the overall quality.

The dip in the Buzzard content last week came on the back of an unexpected drop in production rates at the Nexen-operated Buzzard field—the largest single contributor to the Forties Blend.

Between July 24-26, production at the 210,000 b/d Buzzard field temporarily dropped to around 80,000 b/d due to gas handling restrictions at the St. Fergus gas terminal, which resulted in further deferrals on loading dates for the Forties August program.

At the current 29%, the Forties Blend is expected to show a sulfur content of around 0.58% and gravity of 40.70 API.

BP provides weekly data on the percentage of Buzzard grade injected into the Forties system on its website.
