China Natural Gas completed the first test navigation of an LNG-powered ship in its waters, the company said Friday.

The test marked the first time an LNG-powered ship has navigated in China's domestic waterways, demonstrating that LNG can be used both in cars and ships as a fuel.

The test took place in Wuhan Tuesday, the company said in a statement.

The company fueled a tugboat weighing more than 300 tons with LNG for the Wuhan Ferry Company. The ship now runs on a fuel formula of 30% diesel and 70%
natural gas.

"This achievement is a big step in the history of China's new energy industry and will contribute to environmental protection and reduce energy consumption," said Qinan Ji, CEO of China Natural Gas. "The marketing of LNG-powered ships will be implemented on a full scale in the forthcoming years."

The company hopes to have extensive coverage of the Yangtze River with LNG-powered ships, Qinan added.

China Natural Gas transports and sells natural gas to vehicular fueling terminals, and commercial, industrial and residential customers in China's Shaanxi and Henan provinces.
