RAC adopts two opinions

https://www.chemnet.com   Dec 15,2010 ECHA

The Committee for Risk Assessment (RAC) has adopted opinions on two proposals for harmonised classification and labelling across Europe.

The opinions are as follows:

HBCDD (hexabromocyclododecane)

RAC agreed with the proposal from Sweden to classify HBCDD for reproductive toxicity due to effects on the unborn or breast-fed child. The classification of this substance is not currently harmonised at EU level.

The main downstream uses of HBCDD are in the polymer and textile industries. HBCDD can be used on its own or in combination with other flame retardants.

Leucomalachite green

RAC agreed with the proposal from the United Kingdom to classify leucomalachite green as a carcinogen and mutagen. The classification of this substance is not currently harmonised at EU level.

Leucomalachite green is used as a cell stain in laboratories (histopathology stain).

The role of RAC in EU regulatory processes

RAC is responsible for preparing scientific opinions of the Agency on proposals for harmonised classification and labelling and other questions relating to risks to human health or the environment. The final decision for harmonised classification and labelling will be taken by the European Commission through a committee procedure.
