The European Commission's proposal to introduce a minimum import price for hot rolled coil is not a threat to Iran's Mobarakeh Steel Co, Chilanonline, a website of the Iranian Steel Producers Association Sunday quoted MSC managing director Bahram Sobhani as saying.

Noting that the outcome of the dumping investigation has not yet been finalized, Sobhani, who is also a member of ISPA's board of directors, added the EC proposal was for a base price for imports to cap anti-dumping duties.

He said this would not be a threat to MSC because it would cover only hot rolled products, while his company, in addition to HRC, is an exporter of cold rolled coil, galvanized sheet, tinplate and even slab products which the EU needs.

"Besides that, we are exploring new markets now. MSC has been entering the African market for the first time in the last year. Also in Southeast Asia, we entered the Thai, Taiwanese and Malaysian markets. Thus, even if we face a restriction on exports of hot rolled coil to Europe, we have alternative markets."

With 10.3 million mt/year capacity, MSC is Iran's largest steel producer. It exported some 173,087 mt of products in the first three months of the current Iranian year (to June 21), marking a 69% year-on-year fall, according to Iranian mines and metal state holding Imidro.

The company's priority is to supply Iran's downstream manufacturers, with exports being of secondary importance, MSC executives have said.
