Polystyrene Market Update in North America, August 6, 2007
https://www.chemnet.com Aug 09,2007 The Plastics Exchange
Volume: Average
Price: Slightly weaker
Spot Polystyrene prices gave back the penny it gained the previous week. While we continue to see a light flow of spot offerings, steady to easing Styrene monomer and Benzene feedstocks have relieved some upward pressure on the Polystyrene market. Although margins are not great, Polystyrene producers have at least shown good discipline by keeping operating rates reduced and uncomfortable levels of inventories from developing.
While we have not seen an overabundance of good offgrade made available to the market, there have been groups of lower grade cars sold as spot. Railcars of poor color or material with black specs can be found in the high $.60s - low $.70s/lb. Good quality GPPS has been available in the low-mid $70s/lb with HIPS priced a couple of cents higher.
Producers are not overtly showing Generic Prime railcars to the spot market, although additional, non-disruptive spot demand would find willing sellers either out of producers' inventories or in new production. Pricing here would generally be in the mid-high $70s/lb.
