Chemical distributor Midwest Chlor-Alkali (Indianapolis, IN), an affiliate of Harris & Ford (Indianapolis, IN), says it will invest $68 million to build a manufacturing facility adjacent to Cargill's corn milling facility at Eddyville, IA. The plant will produce 100,000 dst/year of sodium hydroxide, 250,000 dst/year of hydrochloric acid, and an undisclosed amount of bleach. Production at the new facility will start in early 2009 and will serve Cargill's eight North American corn-milling plants as well as other customers. Financial details were not disclosed. As with other companies located at Cargill's Iowa Bioprocessing Center, Midwest will receive its water supply and wastewater treatment from Cargill. Cargill will also invest in pipelines to connect the two companies. "This is a great example of how Cargill can help create business development opportunities for diverse suppliers in parts of the supply chain where few such suppliers operate," says Timothy Thomas, director/supplier diversity at Cargill. "It creates strategic benefits for both the suppliers and for Cargill," Thomas says. For Midwest, the project offers a way for the company to move beyond distribution into manufacturing, says Tim Harris, president at Midwest.
