MOSCOW, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- Russian gas giant Gazprom has signed an agreement with Ukraine to settle 1.3 billion dollars of gas debt, news agencies reported Tuesday.
The agreement was signed after talks between Gazprom chief executive officer Alexei Miller and visiting Ukrainian Fuel and Energy Minister Yuri Boiko in Moscow.
It confirms the size of the debt and provides for a plan to payit off by November 1, 2007, Gazprom said in a statement.
Gazprom warned recently that it would cut the gas supply to Ukraine if the claimed 1.3 billion U.S. dollars was not paid off this month. Ukraine, however, said companies not the government owe the debts.
The Russian company feeds about one quarter of Europe's gas demand, 80 percent of which is transferred via Ukraine.
